The Hedland Senior High School Trade Training Centre is a first class training facility which offers new forms of innovative training for students in Years 11 and 12. The Trade Training Centre offers a dynamic new approach to trade training with a purpose built training facility and strong links to industry and potential employers, accessed through specialised work experience.

Students in the Trade Training Centre are able to improve their industry skills through having access to the premium, state of the art, fully equipped workshop. Students participate in 220 hours of Work Experience over year 11 and 12 working closely with mining companies such as BHP and MG with the intention to be picked for apprenticeships with these companies upon the completion of year 12. An emphasis is placed on developing skills for the workplace with pathways to apprenticeships.

Courses

Students can access two industry relevant courses in the Trade Training Centre – Certificate II in Engineering (Metals Fabrication) and a Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure. The Certificates obtained by students are nationally recognised and can assist students down various different pathways following graduation.

CERTIFICATE II ENGINEERING (METALS FABRICATION)

Students wanting to pursue a career in areas including but not limited to fitting, boilermaking and welding are encouraged to complete a Certificate II in Engineering (Metals Fabrication). The Certificate II is delivered alongside Industry OSH standards through on the job training at structured work placements and off the job training in the Trade Training Centre. Students completing this Certificate will also complete Maths, English and Design.

CERTIFICATE II RAIL DESIGN

Students wanting to pursue careers including but not limited to track maintenance, plant operating and waygang driving are encouraged to complete a Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure. The certificiate is a general qualification for a person engaged in basic operations within the rail infrastructure environment undertaking a range of tasks involving known routines and procedures and taking some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes. Students completing this Certificate will also complete Maths, English and Design.

The Hedland Senior High School Trade Training Centre’s primary aims are to:

  • Assist in the transition from school to work
  • Address the skilled worker shortages in the Hedland Area and surroundings
  • Enable graduation through qualification
  • Provide the possibility to achieve life skills
  • Facilitate the opportunity to pursue a chosen career path
