The Science Learning Area at Hedland Senior High School includes an extensive range of enthusiastic specialist teachers and interesting courses.

Science provides a practical way of answering interesting and important questions about the biological, physical and technological world. Science is a dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavour that arises from our desire to make sense of our world by exploring the unknown, investigating universal mysteries, making predictions and solving problems. Science aims to understand a large number of observations in terms of a much smaller number of broad principles. Science knowledge is contestable and is revised, refined and extended as new evidence arises.

The Western Australian Science Curriculum provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important science concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, of science’s contribution to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives. The curriculum supports students in developing the scientific knowledge, understandings, and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and participate, if they so wish, in science-related careers.

The Hedland SHS Science Learning Area are also proudly embedding Aboriginal Sciences in all strands of Science and promote local scientific knowledge as often as possible.

In lower school, we offer differentiated pathways with a broad range of abilities to cater to individual needs. In upper school, we offer ATAR and General courses to allow all students with a passion in Science to study their interests.

In upper school, students are given the opportunity to study a range of WACE Science courses available, which include:

  • Human Biology
