A message from our Principal, Janine Keall:
On behalf of all members of our thriving school community, welcome to Hedland Senior High School. It is our intention to be recognised as a school committed to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of our educational programs. We offer the full spectrum of educational opportunities designed to equip all our students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for their future. We plan to deliver a successful educational experience to all our students.
Hedland SHS is uniquely located in the heart of one of Australia’s most industrially focussed cities, making a significant contribution to this country’s GDP. Consequently, we have established close and supportive partnerships with local industries, and particularly large companies including BHP, FMG, Rio Tinto and Roy Hill. All students are engaged in a vocational pathway by Year 11, tracking them towards University entrance, an
apprenticeship with a local company, or further training or employment at the end of year 12.
The curriculum covers the complete suite of courses, ranging from those designed for academically talented students through to programs for students who need specific learning interventions. A broad range of extra-curricular programs across the Arts, Technology and Sport and Recreation offers something for every student. Follow the Dream, Swans-V netball and football, and the Clontarf Academy are specific initiatives designed to improve student engagement, participation and achievement at school. We plan for every student to be a successful learner.
Our teaching and support staff are a committed team, professionally skilled and focused on delivering excellence in their classrooms. They understand that successful learning is built on developing and maintaining positive relationships with all their students. They establish effective channels of communication with the parents of their students. Students are tracked through each stage of learning, and extension and remediation strategies are consistently used to ensure all students complete year 12 successfully.
The Hedland community is clear about their expectations for our school. Parents want high quality educational outcomes delivered in a safe and supportive learning environment. Industry groups require graduating students to bring with them work readiness skills relating to both attitude and aptitude. The school staff plan to deliver on these expectations.
Finally, please take the time to review the information presented here. I’m sure you will be impressed with all that Hedland Senior School has to offer its students, staff and the Hedland community.
