Hedland Senior High School has a long history of delivering high quality Vocational Education and Training (VET) programs with very strong links with the local community. Our VET programs provide students with the opportunity to achieve Nationally Recognised Qualifications in Certificate I, II, III and IV, as well as Structure Workplace Learning.
The school has strong links to various Registered Training Organisations (RTO) with scope to issue qualifications in a range of industry areas including Business, Engineering, Sports Recreation, Kitchen Operations, Automotive, Maritime, Rail Infrastructure, Health and Nursing, Fitness, Community Services and Construction. The school also has a Trade Training Centre on site with state-of-the-art facilities for delivery in Engineering.
Hedland Senior High School has many different VET pathways for students to enrol in such as School Based Traineeships (SBT), Work Ready (WR) and Alternative Pathways to University (APU). In 2023, Hedland Senior High School was awarded Bronze in the School Pathways to VET Category at the National Training Awards in Hobart Tasmania.
This is a reflection of our unique School Based Traineeship Program and its successful outcomes for students, linking them to employment post school. We have had students reach finalist stage at WorldSkills competitions, which is a reflection of the VET programs offered at the school, with a high level of support provided to students to ensure positive outcomes for future work and/or training.
VET programs may suit students who like a more practical, hands-on approach to schooling and offers students a combination of education and industry training whilst in Years 11 and 12. Successful completion of VET courses may provide students with improved access to TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships, and future employment. Selection for a position in a TAFE course is based on student performance in Year 10 and interview.
Workplace Learning
Students participating in VET programs are required to complete Workplace Learning. This is a SCSA endorsed program that provides students with up to 4-unit equivalents towards their WACE/WASSA. This highly successful program allows students to experience a number of workplaces, carefully selected by staff after consultation with students.
This experience is invaluable, and many students gain employment or apprenticeships as a direct result of their performance in the workplace.
