Hedland Senior High School is set to benefit from a once in a generation transformation following a major funding announcement for Port Hedland.
An $80 million upgrade to the school has been confirmed as the centrepiece of BHP’s $160 million community investment, the largest of its kind in Western Australia.
A New Era for Hedland Senior High School
The significant investment will see outdated and degraded buildings demolished and replaced with modern, fit for purpose facilities designed to meet the needs of current and future students.
The redevelopment will address long standing infrastructure, capacity and amenity challenges at Hedland Senior High School, which educates more than 1,200 students each year.
Planned improvements include:
- New design, technology and science facilities
- Modern general classrooms
- Enhanced learning environments to support a broad range of educational pathways
The project will deliver a staged, comprehensive redevelopment aimed at creating a contemporary secondary school that supports enrolment growth, specialist education programs and improved student outcomes.
The final scope of the works will be determined by the Department of Education, with initial stages expected to be completed by early 2029.
Supporting Students, Staff and the Community
Education Minister Sabine Winton highlighted the importance of the investment for local families, noting that the funding represents a “significant boost for students, teachers and families of Port Hedland” and will help deliver a “state of the art secondary school.”
The redevelopment is expected to strengthen family retention in Hedland and contribute to long term workforce development by ensuring students have access to high quality education in a modern environment.
Part of a Broader Community Investment
The school upgrade is part of a wider package of investments designed to support the growing Port Hedland community.
This includes:
- $20 million for a new South Hedland aquatic centre
- $10 million towards essential service worker accommodation
- Additional funding under the Resources Community Investment Initiative and the State Government’s Seven Cities program
Together, these projects aim to improve liveability, address housing shortages and support community wellbeing across the region.
Western Australian Premier Roger Cook emphasised that investment in infrastructure is key to supporting the Pilbara as the State’s economic powerhouse and ensuring regional communities have access to high quality services and facilities.
A Transformational Opportunity
BHP Australia President Geraldine Slattery described the investment as the company’s largest community contribution in Western Australia, noting its potential to support young people, enhance local facilities and strengthen essential services.
“This will help young people get a good education, build great local facilities and ensure more housing for the people who deliver vital services to the region,” she said.
For Hedland Senior High School, the announcement marks a transformational moment, one that will reshape the learning environment for current students and generations to come.
