Strengthening Cultural Understanding Through Professional Learning

Hedland Senior High School recently hosted the first Cultural Responsiveness Professional Learning session for 2026, welcoming approximately 150 education staff from across Hedland in a powerful day of shared learning and reflection.

Organised by the Pilbara Regional Office, the workshop was delivered by respected Kariyarra Elder Mrs Raylene Button, a fifth-generation custodian of Kariyarra Country and a key member of Hedland Aboriginal Strong Leaders (HASL). The session created a structured and culturally safe space for educators to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal histories, identities and perspectives, strengthening their capacity to support Aboriginal students in their classrooms.

Throughout the day, participants explored the historical impacts affecting Aboriginal communities, the richness of Pilbara Aboriginal identity and the significance of Kariyarra skin groups. Raylene’s knowledge, storytelling and lived experience brought depth and authenticity to the learning, encouraging staff to reflect on their own practice and the role education plays in building respectful, inclusive environments.

Raylene was supported by staff from Julyardi Aboriginal Corporation, who generously contributed their time and expertise to ensure the success of the session. The collaborative effort highlighted the importance of strong partnerships between schools and local Aboriginal organisations in creating meaningful, community-led professional learning.

The Cultural Responsiveness program is being delivered over two sessions to accommodate the participation of several Hedland schools, with a second session scheduled for Term 2. Across both days, more than 300 education staff will take part in the initiative, reinforcing a shared regional commitment to culturally responsive education.

Hedland Senior High School is proud to support opportunities that strengthen relationships with community and promote understanding, respect and equity for Aboriginal students. This professional learning marks an important step in continuing to build culturally responsive schools across the Pilbara.
